Pain and canes
Posted by Charles von Marinus on December 3rd, 2008 filed in Gentleman's Accessories, RamblingA few evenings ago I fell asleep on the sofa in an odd position. Since then, I’ve had a great deal of pain when I walk. Hobbling from place to place I’ve been cursing my lack of foresight in leaving my cane in storage 800 miles away when I moved across the country.
Desperate for relief, I located a shoeshiner a few block of my office who carried canes. Limping inside, I put on a front of A Discerning Customer, putting my pain aside as best I could. The handles were of varying attractiveness, from the classic brass round knob, to the hideous ergonomic numbers. Selecting an interesting nickel snake-head cane, I gave it a look over, especially at price, since many shops have outrageous markup on walking canes. As it was only $45, I tested it to make sure it wasn’t too short, something which is often an issue as I’m quite a bit taller than many of the folk who purchase canes. In a stroke of luck, it was long enough, being roughly half my height. I pulled out the aforesaid brass knobbed cane and examined it’s length. It, also, was long enough. Relief was within reach, and it brought it’s friend fashion along!
Sadly, this post doesn’t have a happy ending. I ended up deciding against purchasing a cane after all, as the pain to my pocketbook after moving is greater than the pain of hobbling around for another day or two. I still plan on acquiring an additional cane soon, but it can wait till my pocketbook has recovered more from the move.
