On Gentlemen

Posted by Sterling Carter on September 20th, 2008 filed in Administration, Rambling

Welcome to the Melbury Gentlemen’s Club!  As our first order of business, it seems advisable to answer the question our name raises: what do we mean, “gentlemen?”  Is this a place for rich, sexist white guys to bump chests and compare bedpost notches?  Is this yet another den of moustache-twirling, gin-swilling white collar pigs who’ve never done a hard day’s work?  Is this a haven for faux-intelligent elitists who would force their opinions on any who will listen?

How on Earth could we have come to associate the term “gentleman” with such behavior?  To be sure, plenty of men have acted thus and been so termed.  I think we can do much better, though.  This site is dedicated, in part, to exploring what a gentleman should be.  It is a conversation on manliness, and all are welcome to participate.  Our fast-paced world puts little value on stopping for long enough to consider what sort of people our actions have made of us, but every thought and conversation changes us just a bit.  The question raised here is: what are we becoming?

We have a lot of plans for future posts.  Stay tuned, and let us know what you think!

(By the by, if you do have a moustache, twirl away!)

I registered before I read this particular post.

I reserve the right to swill my gin.

By all means! I’m a white collar gin swiller myself. I just aim not to be a pig.
